“You need to dress for the job you want…”
If you want to move up, you can’t just act like you’re “doing your job”... you have to start acting like you already own the role.
The truth? Most promotions are decided long before an interview ever happens.
Here’s what actually helps:
1. Keep receipts.
Don’t just say you’re good at what you do. Keep a simple one-pager of wins — numbers, outcomes, impact. If you can’t explain how your work moved the business, you’re making it hard for anyone else to do it for you.
2. Lead without the title.
You don’t need permission to step up. Put your hand up for the messy, cross-team stuff. Be the person who fixes the thing everyone else is just talking about in Slack.
3. Ask for feedback early.
Don’t wait for annual reviews. Ask while the work is happening. It shows you care, you’re coachable, and you’re already thinking at the next level.
At the end of the day, you can be the hardest worker in the room but make sure you make your value visible.
